After a record 2015 year, Xiaomi seems to be facing a more complex time in terms of sales and competition. Two years ago, there was not so much competing company on its own ground nor the average range of giants was of such a level. Against this backdrop, offering the best of the market in hardware with an attractive design at a cost price worked. Recall that the company’s goal is not to make money with smartphones but to create a brand and sell products from a catalog that includes even towels. That’s where they make a profit.
This Xiaomi Mi6 is a response of the company to move to a next level in which not only the price is what interests. Or in what stands out. Keeping its high level as an assembler of the best components, this terminal adds a level design (there are possible improvements in dimensions). This includes resistance to splashes and a camera of a rather high level. Especially noteworthy is the second camera that enables a 2X optical zoom.
The difference with the high-end of this higher-level 2017 is also clear: design innovations (theme so trendy frames) and quality/resolution / screen size. There the Xiaomi Mi6 is clearly behind.
In our test, we lacked to appreciate more optimization so that performance or battery offered everything they should. And do not forget that, despite its possibilities or that we have with ROM Global, MIUI has not been designed for use outside of China. But the price commands and for a certain sector of users is irresistible. Despite the handles.
MIUI is now more of a disadvantage than a sales pitch
When we talk about Chinese mobile phones, we usually refer to mobile phones manufactured there that are not commercially marketed in the West. Huawei or ZTE would not fall into this category but Oukitel or Elephone did.
Xiaomi also falls into this category but in a much more overwhelming way. It is not only a Chinese mobile but created for China. This is something buyers have clear and almost anyone interested in this brand will not be afraid to change the ROM for a Global, to install the Google Play Store and Google Services manually, but it is inconvenient.
It has taken me several weeks to properly configure all aspects of this mobile. I’m talking about getting the calendar, contacts, applications, and notifications to work as I wanted. It is something that is known but does not recommend it for the average user. The only Xiaomi with Android 7.1.1 serial is noted in this section. Not everything is the same as in previous models.
On the other hand, although it has Nougat Xiaomi does not take advantage of it with MIUI 8 and will not do it until MIUI 9, that surely arrives at the time that Android 8.0. Responses in notifications or split screen, aspects that have been almost a year between us. Still, can not be used in this model.
Next, we will review all the elements of the phone
The front of the Xiaomi Mi 6 is mainly occupied by the screen. It has quite narrow frames on the sides. Although the useful surface of the screen does not go side by side as on some other phones.
The space that is above and below the screen is something larger than we would like, especially after having seen what the company can do with the Mi MIX.
In the area of the screen, we find the front camera, the ear speaker, and the notification LED. This is barely visible when not in operation.
At the bottom, we find the two capacitive buttons that remain invisible when the phone’s screen is off and, in the middle, the Home button.
When the screen turns on, the two buttons – Tasks and Backlight up for a few seconds. Then turn off again until we touch the screen or the area where one of the buttons is located.
In my opinion, it would have been more accurate to mark these buttons with some inscription. That will allow the user to know exactly where the two buttons are and what function they have.
In the back side, we find in the upper left corner the camera with double lens. You may this arrangement similar to the iPhone 7 Plus.
However, unlike the Apple phone, Xiaomi has managed to make the camera flush with the surface and not exceed one millimeter.
Most of the back cover is free of any element or ornament.
At the bottom, we find the logo MI of Xiaomi, in bright silver letters. It is the only symbol that denotes that we are in front of a Chinese brand phone.
On the right side, e find the power button and next, an elongated volume button. Both buttons are well-known to the touch. So, we have no problem pressing on one or the other without looking at it.
